How to Play, Step by Step
Learn the moves
Pawns move forward one square (two on their first move) and capture diagonally. Rooks move in straight lines, bishops diagonally, the queen in any straight or diagonal line, the knight in an L-shape, and the king one square in any direction.
Alternate turns
Players alternate moving one piece per turn, trying to control the center and develop pieces safely.
Watch for check
If your king is under direct attack, you're in check and must move out of it, block it, or capture the attacking piece.
Deliver checkmate
The game ends when a king is in check with no legal move to escape — that's checkmate, and the game is won.
Rules to Know
- Castling lets the king move two squares toward a rook (which then moves beside it), allowed only if neither piece has moved and no squares between them are attacked or occupied.
- En passant lets a pawn capture an opponent's pawn that just moved two squares past it, as if it had only moved one.
- Pawns that reach the far end of the board promote, usually to a queen.
- A stalemate — no legal move but not in check — ends the game in a draw.
