YouTube rooms

Sync YouTube with friends, frame for frame.

One link, one shared timeline. Play, pause or skip and every player in the room moves with you — so nobody is watching ten seconds behind. No extension, no account, no screen share.

The mechanism

Watch YouTube together without screen sharing

A screen share sends one re-compressed video of your desktop to everybody, and your upload speed becomes everyone's picture quality. A sync room sends a timestamp instead. Each viewer's own browser streams the video straight from YouTube at full quality, and the room keeps all of them on the same second.

Longer version, with the Discord and Meet workarounds compared: how to share a YouTube video without screen sharing.

Inside a room

Everything that keeps a room together

A synced player on its own gets boring fast. These are the parts people actually use once the video is running.

A shared queue

Anyone in the room can add the next video. The queue is the room's, not the host's, so the night keeps moving without one person driving.

Chat and reactions

Text alongside the video, plus one-tap reactions that pop on everyone's screen at the same timestamp. The running commentary is half the point.

Talk over it

Open your mic when typing is too slow. Push-to-talk if you would rather not broadcast your room, and speaking indicators so nobody talks over anybody.

Host controls

Hand out seek rights or keep them. Useful when twelve people are in and you would rather not have the timeline yanked around mid-scene.

Works on a phone

The room is a web page, so it opens on a phone, a tablet, a laptop or a smart TV browser. Nobody has to install anything to join from the bus.

Private by default

A new room is invite-only: it exists for whoever has the link. Flip it public and it shows up in Discover for anyone to walk into.

Three steps

From a YouTube link to a room in about ten seconds

Paste the link

Any YouTube URL — a video, a playlist, a live stream. The room takes it from the clipboard and loads the player.

Choose who joins

Invite-only, or public and listed in Discover. You can switch this later without losing the room.

Share and press play

Send the link. Everyone who opens it lands on your current timestamp, already in sync.

Who uses these rooms

Built for the people who are not in the same room

Long-distance friends and couples

The nightly "press play in three, two, one" ritual, without the countdown. Same frame, same timestamp, across time zones.

Study groups and classmates

Lecture recordings and tutorials watched together, paused the moment someone is lost.

Remote teams

Design reviews and recorded demos where everyone needs to be looking at the same second of footage to argue about it properly.

Creators and communities

Premiere parties and reaction nights in a public room, with chat and reactions carrying the crowd.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a browser extension to sync YouTube with friends?

No. The room runs as a normal web page, so there is nothing to install on any device. That is the main practical difference from extension-based tools, which only work in the one desktop browser you installed them in.

Can we watch YouTube together on our phones?

Yes. The room opens in a mobile browser and behaves the same way — shared playback, chat, reactions and mic. Some people join from a phone while the video plays on a laptop in the same room; both count as members, so leave one muted.

Is it free to watch YouTube together online?

Creating and joining a room is free, and you do not need an account to join one someone sends you. Signing up only matters if you want your rooms and settings to persist.

How many people can be in one YouTube room?

Rooms are built for friend-group and classroom scale rather than broadcast scale. If you are planning something unusually large, tell us in contact first so we can look at it with you.

Does it work with playlists and live streams?

Yes — paste a playlist and the room advances through it together, or paste a live stream and everyone sits on the live edge. For Twitch specifically, use a Twitch room, which handles relayed stream chat.

What if I want to watch a video file instead of YouTube?

That is a different room type. Watch party rooms cover movie nights from a file, and this page covers YouTube specifically.
