How to Play

How to Play Dominoes Online

Dominoes is the classic Double-Six tile game for two players. Match the open ends of the line of play with tiles from your hand — the first to empty their hand, or the player with fewer pips left when play blocks, wins.

Objective

Be the first to play every tile in your hand, or hold the fewest pips if play gets blocked.

Setup

  • The game uses a full Double-Six set: 28 unique tiles from 0-0 to 6-6.
  • Each player is dealt 7 tiles; the remaining 14 tiles form the boneyard to draw from.
  • The player holding the highest double opens the game — if neither hand has a double, the highest single tile opens instead.

How to Play, Step by Step

1

Play a matching tile

On your turn, play a tile from your hand that matches either open end of the line.

2

Draw if you can't play

In the default draw mode, if you have no legal move, draw tiles from the boneyard until you can play or it runs out.

3

Pass if you're stuck

If you truly have no legal move (and the boneyard is empty, or you're in block mode), your turn is skipped.

4

Go out or block

The round ends when a player plays their last tile, or when both players pass in a row with no moves left.

Rules to Know

  • Tiles are matched end to end — only the two open ends of the line of play can be played against.
  • The highest double opens the game; without a double in either hand, the highest single tile opens instead.
  • Going out (playing your last tile) scores you the pip-count of your opponent's remaining hand.
  • If play blocks with tiles left in both hands, whoever holds fewer pips wins and scores the difference; equal pips is a draw.

Tips & Strategy

Hold onto tiles that match numbers your opponent seems short on — it limits their options later.
Try to get rid of your highest-pip tiles early, since they count against you if the game blocks.
Keep track of which numbers have already been played heavily — they're less likely to show up again from the boneyard.
In draw mode, drawing repeatedly can change your hand's shape significantly — don't assume your opening hand is your only shot.
